Question about XML vs. SGML/DSSSL? (was Re: DocBook XML)

I'm trying to understand this part of one of your recent messages:

Could you explain a bit more about what XML/XSL offers you that 
SGML/DSSSL does not?

I'm still trying to understand the benefits of the newer approach.
